fine dining in sheffield

We might have a football song featuring a greasy chip butty and love a hearty pie but fine dining can be found in Sheffield.

Small plates and tasting menus are something we don’t shout about but we should be and they are remarkably good value compared to other cities. Here’s a few restaurants in Sheffield that are a bit special (don’t worry, you don’t need a suit or tie, the food is the star of these shows…).

Joro

Joro

Joro is a unique urban restaurant based at Krynkl, a converted shipping container complex in Kelham Island.

Sounds pretentious, right? Nah, it’s pretty chill actually and holds the prestigious Bib Gourmand in the 2019 Michelin Guide, it also has 3 AA Rosettes and a score of 5 in the Good Food Guide.

The restaurant opened in 2017 and almost immediately gained a glowing reputation. Foodies travelled from other countries to eat here, that doesn’t happen in Sheffield.

What makes Joro even more special is that it isn’t somebody who’s seen an opportunity and moved in, both owners, Luke French and partner Stacey have been part of the areas hospitality scene for years, working their way up through The Milestone Group ranks.

The restaurant is intimate, the kitchen is open, the ingredients are hyper seasonal and the plates are sublime. Every mouthful tickles tastebuds unlike anything you’ve had before.

Their 8 course tasting menu costs £65 (5 course lunch tasting menu costs £35). The waiting list is long.

Tonco

Tonco

When it comes to ‘up-and-coming areas’ Dyson Place, just off Sharrow Vale Road is exactly that. It’s also the home of Tonco.

It opened in late 2019 after a series of pop-up events gave them a reputation and a following. The menu depends on the availability of ingredients but the goal is always the same, small eclectic, simple plates executed to perfection, partnered with fabulous wine.

Their plates range from £3 to £20, the majority £7/£8.

Having only been open a few months before lockdown was enforced, this is only the beginning for these guys.

Rafters

rafters

Situated on leafy Oakbrook Road, Rafters is a 2 AA Rosettes Michelin listed restaurant which scored 4 in the Good Food Guide.

The restaurant offers a relaxed atmosphere with quirky interior and a cosy setting so you can feel comfortable during your meal. That doesn’t mean the place isn’t high-end, everything about it oozes quality, especially when it comes to the food, drink and the service. It’s all about the Rafters vibe.

There’s 3 ‘experiences’ when it comes to eating at Rafters, a 3 course menu which includes a modern take on tapas, an 8 to 10 tasting menu and their classic dinner menu.

Ingredients are sourced for quality first, regionality second and it’s all seasonal, ensuring that the menus evolve depending on availability.

Expect to pay around £80 per person

Silversmiths

Silversmiths

Based on Arundel Street, a creative part of the city centre and a short walk from the train station is Silversmiths, a restaurant that is Sheffield through-and-through.

They aim to deliver a modern dining experience with a strong focus on Yorkshire, especially when it comes to the ingredients.

Silversmiths is famed for its appearance on Gordon Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares in 2009 as it was struggling to survive but they’ve come along way since.

After a few ownership changes over the years things have settled down now. A relaunch and rebranding exercise took place in October 2019 and an exciting young chef running the kitchen has helped reestablish the restaurant.

The food celebrates Yorkshires heritage thanks to a menu packed with classics cooked to perfection, sitting alongside plates full of surprises and imagination.

An evening meal at Silversmiths costs around £40 for 3 courses.

Bench

Bench

Bench in Nether Edge is brought to you by a team who’ve seen it all when it comes to hospitality in Sheffield and this experience shines through during service.

This intimate neighbourhood restaurant is all about perfection whilst keeping things casual. The menu is ever-changing, adaptable to seasons and the availability of the finest ingredients, cooked skilfully and presented with beauty.

The experience isn’t formal, in any sense, order a few small plates, then order some more small plates, the diner is in charge but the team are always on-hand to recommend and explain every element of each ingredient.

You could easily enjoy a meal a drink here for just £40 per person.

Luke's Place

Luke's Place

Luke’s Place opened in September 2020 promising to deliver an affordable 7 course tasting menu served in a cosy environment.

Sitting on Infirmary Road, not the most inspiring location however it’s a short walk from Kelham Island, Walkley and a tram stop, it could easily be the place that kick-starts a new area.

Ran by Luke, an experienced and ambitious chef who’s worked under Tom Kerridge. This is his first restaurant and there’s a reason his name is on the door. Every element has been created by himself, transforming a former take-away joint into an intimate dining experience during lockdown.

For £30 (£50 with the drink package) you got two hours with Luke as he cooks and serves from his open kitchen.

No Name

No Name

No Name in Crookes is one of Sheffield’s best kept secrets. The modern bistro might be understated but the food they create certainly isn’t.

They like to keep things simple, the menu is small (only 4 mains), the ingredients local and the restaurant is tiny.

Ran by Thomas Samworth who previously worked with Gary Rhodes has created one of the most in-demand restaurants in the country since opening in 2017. Within 2 years it made it into the Good Food Guide.

Great ingredients, cooked with flare in a creative setting.

Go on, treat yer’sen.

After you’ve dined why not have a drink in Sheffield’s amazing independent pubs and bars.
