The legend of the Wharncliffe, or Wantley, Dragon is a tale peculiar to the rocky, wooded area to the north of the city of Sheffield. Although it is quite possibly a re-telling of a much earlier story, the “official” version relates the slaying of a dragon to a famous legal battle in the 17th century, when the Earl of Shrewsbury was defeated in his attempt to procure the tithes of the Parish of Sheffield.

Personally, I think the story dates back much further – probably a fragment of a pre-Christian folk tale – and was merely re-used by the 17th century balladeer.

This hand-printed linocut image uses my own unique artwork, hand carved and created entirely using traditional methods. No digital or other technology was used in its creation, and every copy will have minor differences that make it unique.

The picture is printed on Zerkall acid-free 145gsm paper, using Schminke black, water-based ink. Although this is an open-ended edition, I have titled and signed each copy.
