The Bear Abbeydale Road

The Bear craft beer shop sailing into Abbeydale Road

Nether Edge keeps getting better and better as The Bear, another great beer destination is set to open later this month/early next month.

We caught up with Matt who left a career in education last year to turn his craft beer passion into a business, He is currently busy revamping the spot that was once The Rude Shipyard on Abbeydale Road but he can’t wait to welcome customers in, promising a great selection of craft beer, alongside ciders, wine and spirits to take home, with a small bar in the back for those wanting to try something fresh.

“I love the diversity of Abbeydale Road and have been a big fan for a few years, I think it’s the best drinking road in the city, for a craft beer fan and there are so many great places to eat too. I think The Bear could be seen as the start (or the end) of a great run of places to drink, or just a good, friendly location to pop in and buy a few beers. I’m keen to offer a good range and maybe offer a few things other shops in the city haven’t got in.”

Although Sheffield’s heritage lays in cask beer, craft beer is very much and in the present. Matt’s favourites?

“So many to mention!  Saint Mars of the Desert have been amazing for putting Sheffield beer on the map recently but old favourites Abbeydale are nationally recognised too and rightly so. Triple Point are great too, and not enough people know about Whitefaced Beer at Penistone.”

Further afield…

“National heroes Deya and Verdant can’t fail but to make incredible pales, IPAs and DIPAs year after year, but for something really special like an imperial stout I would go for a De Moersleutel or a Maltgarden, but I love a sweet pastry stout at about 10-12% and they make some of the best around. Vocation and Omnipollo make some cracking danger stouts too! I could definitely go on but I’d have to open a beer…”

We can’t wait to add this to our Abbeydale Road crawl. Two Thirds, Dead Donkey, Turners, Picture House Social, BarrowBoy, The Broadfield, Cole’s Corner, now The Bear… Is this becoming the most vibrant neighbourhood in the city?
