“Tramlines isn’t what it used be”, said many people from Sheffield and yes, they are correct but there’d be something wrong if it was still that inner-city DIY festival that started in 2009. The old days were great but Sheffield deserved a big outdoor festival that brings festival goers and headline acts to the city. This month the festival returns to Hillsborough Park for the third time, headlined by The Streets, Royal Blood and Supergrass whilst showcasing new and exciting acts such as Billy Nomates, Holly Humberstone and Baby Queen.
Obviously 2020’s festival was cancelled due to the pandemic but there was plenty of thirst for it, any tickets remaining for the rescheduled event this summer were quickly snapped up as people crossed fingers for a summer of freedom.
Last week the festival confirmed that it will be 100% going ahead as planned, without social distancing measures in place as part of Government’s Events Research Programme, attendees will need to show proof of double vaccination or negative test results for entry.
If you didn’t manage to grab a ticket or didn’t fancy the line-up don’t worry, the Tramlines Fringe Festival also returns. Tramlines might not be an independent festival owned by Sheffielder’s anymore but its successful growth has allowed the old Tramlines ethics to remain with the Fringe Festival as venues/pubs/bars/street corners get to host live music throughout the city over the weekend and most of it is free!
So, if you’re one of those who misses the ‘old Tramlines’ or would rather discover your new favourite band instead of watching The Kooks play the ‘hits’ then these are the independents you can go to between the 23rd and 25th July.
